Review: Royal China (Fine dining- Chinese)
16th Floor, Eros Corporate Tower, Nehru Place, Delhi. Ph # +91-11-49818000
I had no reason not to give into my friend’s pick in Royal China for our lunch date, especially after the Indo-Chinese lineage in her described it as ‘the best Chinese restaurant in the city’. Though, i must confess that I really wasn’t quite prepared for the opulence that this standalone restaurant offers. Located on the 16th floor of Eros tower in Nehru Place, it is one of the very few restaurants in the city to offer a splendid view of the city.
A great view of the Bahai temple and the ISCON temple through its huge glass panelled walls would make for quite a scenic view on weekend nights, I am sure.
I have given away too much already and it dosen’t take a genius to guess that the décor was impeccable too. Gold and black décor, a dash of gold here and there on everything from linen, cutlery to the serving dishes. An elegant, minimalist yet royal ambiance supports the great culinary experience that Royal China offers. We’d arrived for a lunch on a weekday so getting a table by the window was easy, but the scene is quite different on weekends I am told, so reserving in advance might be a good idea.
Staff was courteous and helpful with the menu suggestion, but frankly I did’nt need any recommendations for I was lucky to have a company who had tried everything on the list already. So, all the little help I needed, like re- filling of water goblet or repeating my soup etc, were taken care of promptly.
The restaurant serves two Brunch options besides the Al a carte, the unlimited Dimsum lunch and the Chinese tasting lunch. We went ahead with the Unlimited Dimsum lunch, oh please don’t be prejudiced for you’d not know what a simple food like dimsum can offer unless you’ve tried over 50 different variety of Dimsums here at Royal China. The “unlimited” literally means you can keep eating till you drop. The set lunch is divided in four courses, unlimited soups, dimsums, mains or appetisers and then a round up of two desserts.
We started off with a serve of wonton and creamy sweet corn soup respectively and the flavoursome clear broth set our moods just right to foray ahead. Here goes a list of order that we placed- Seafood Dumpling with ginger and chilli oil, Asparagus and Beef roll, Spare ribs in black bean sauce, Steamed prawn dumpling with Coriander, Pork Sui Mai dumplings, Steamed mini glutinous rice in lotus leaf, Roast pork bun, Fried prawn Dumpling, Sesame Prawn toast (yeah that was for just two of us, told you here you eat till you drop). So we ate and talked and ate and talked, could it get better than that with repeat orders pouring in. Yeah, u read it right we did repeat a few for the serving size was 2 or 3 pieces of dumplings each and we were in mood to eat, devour. The ones that stood out and are highly recommended are the Sesame Prawn toast, Seafood Dumpling in ginger and Chili oil, steamed prawn dumpling with coriander and the Steamed mini glutinous rice. The spare ribs were quite diffrent too, unusual small bite size cut made good nibling bite dipped into the black bean sauce.
If you feel too stuffed to try the desserts, do take a break and ask for the complimentary Chinese tea and relax.Talk and enjoy the ambiance but do make sure to try their Baked Fresh egg tart for its perfect flaky crumbly crust is delicious. While we didn’t order drinks but they also have a well stocked bar and from what I could see a good stock of wines in the menu to be paired with the food.
Have to agree that it’s the best Chinese I’ve had in the city (so far and trust me I’ve tried a whole load of them). If you’ve grown out of your street side Chinese Caravan (which by the way is Indo- Chinese and I often feel that Chinese could kill us for the sacrilege) and love momos, here’s your heaven. Authentic Chinese food, great ambiance, city view from atop 16th floor and good service, if any of this sound like music to your ears than Royal China is your place to be.
Our bill for two was a total of Rs 3068 including taxes for our Awesome unlimited Dimsum lunch on a weekday.
