By the time we woke up today the Sun was already blazing over head. It was the Champions League Finals of Chelsea Vs Bayern Munich that went on till about 4 am as per IST last night, so we practically slept at morning and woke up by afternoon. It kind of felt like a hangover morning, err afternoon and I knew it is going to be a lazy Sunday.
So this evening while lazing on the couch I asked my house help ‘Arti’ to get Cherries from the fridge and she asked me “cheerrey, wo laal laal chote tamatar jaisa?” (those red small tomatoes right?). Without caring for an answer she brought me a bowl full of juicy red cherries. I passed her a handful and I started to gobble down the rest of it myself, totally engrossed in the movie “Desi Boyz” that was airing on a TV channel. Only a minute later came another question “Isme kya faayda hai” (What are its benefits?) and I knew she wanted an answer to this one. I was intrigued for one brief moment but then unable to recall any specific benefit of the fruit I plainly answered “Health ke liye accha hai” (It’s good for health) and turned back to my movie that was already nearing it’s end.
Once the movie was over I went to the kitche, gave Arti instructions for dinner and topped all the remaining Cherries in my bowl with loads of Honey. I picked my Laptop and turned it on for the first time in the day, while it was still booting i popped in a few honey dipped cherries, so delicious they were that i quickly finished up my bowl. All the while that I was watching the movie somewhere at the back of my mind I was wondering, what benefits would ‘Cherry’ have. I usually like to know my fruit well, its benefits, its vitamin or mineral content etc. My guess was that it should be a high source of Iron for its Dark Red colour and Vitamin C for its slight tang , but I was soon to be proved wrong. In times like these one should not guess for we have an easy rescue at our disposal, it’s the “GOOGLE” obviously.
Reading through a number of articles on various sites, the facts that I found about the fruit I love gave me many new reasons to tuck into a bowl full of cherries more often. Here are the highlights of my findings:
- It’s a powerhouse of Antioxidants, hence may help prevent ageing, heart disease, even cancer
- It’s low on Calories
- It’s High on Potassium and Low on Sodium, hence helps maintain blood pressure levels
- It helps reduce arthritic pain and inflammation
I was happy to know that something I love to eat comes with an added health benefit. Health and taste together in my each bite of the pulpy, juicy, sweet Cherry!
Here are the links to the articles which are the source of all the information given above. You might enjoy reading them in detail yourself.
Ps:- I did later go to the kitchen to flaunt my new gained knowledge and advised Arti to have Cherries often as it would help her with the Arthritic pain.
